In September 2003, Carroll Independent Fuel Company established the Community Involvement and Corporate Giving Committee or
"Carroll Cares." The purpose of this Committee is to institute a consistent company-wide approach to providing financial
and non-financial assistance to worthy causes.
The Community Involvement and Corporate Giving Committee has two primary responsibilities: (1.) identifying which community,
charitable events, and volunteer activities to participate in or sponsor, and (2.) overseeing and facilitating all Corporate
giving and monetary donations made on behalf of Carroll Independent Fuel Company.
How It Works
All requests for corporate donations or volunteers are filtered through the Corporate Giving Committee for consideration and
approval. Any solicitations for volunteers, financial support, or sponsorship must be submitted in writing to the
Corporate Giving Committee at 2700 Loch Raven Road, Baltimore, MD 21218.
How Contributions and Volunteer Activities are Selected
The Committee meets on a regular basis and reviews the solicitations received since the last meeting. The Committee uses
the following criteria to determine whether or not the Company should honor the request:
Is the request or solicitation from an employee, a customer or vendor?
Is the request for a worthy cause?
Will the Company's request or volunteer participation have a positive impact on Carroll's corporate image?
Does the Company have a corporate responsibility to be involved or offer support due to the nature of our business?
Will the Company's participation have a positive impact on our relationship with our employees, existing customers, and the community?
Will the Company's participation provide an opportunity to attract new customers?
Corporate Giving and Sponsorship
Carroll's two main charities supported annually include the Muscular Dystrophy Association "MDA" and the Fuel Fund of
Maryland.
Rick Phelps serves on the Board of the Fuel Fund and encourages employees to participate in various Fuel Fund events
throughout the year.
Annually, Carroll Independent Fuel Company hosts a golf tournament and silent auction to raise funds for the MDA.
Carroll Independent employees play an active role in this annual event by either working at the event or participating
with a golf foursome. Last year, Carroll Independent raised almost $20,000 for the MDA and the Company made a $5,000 donation to bring Carroll's
total donation to $25,000.

Corporate Memberships
Carroll Independent supports both the Baltimore Zoo and the National Aquarium at Baltimore as Corporate Members.
Carroll's corporate memberships provide Carroll employees and their families with the opportunity to take advantage of
free admission to the Zoo and Aquarium year-round.
Each year, the Committee evaluates its corporate membership program and decides which two organizations the Company should
support with Corporate membership.
Carroll Cares About the Community
Carroll encourages employees to actively participate and get involved in the community during various volunteer
opportunities advertised throughout the year. Some of these opportunities include the following annual events:
Annual Blood Drive - May 18, 2005 - Carroll Independent hosts an annual blood drive in conjunction with the
American Red Cross. This year's blood drive was held on May 18, 2005, and it was a huge success! Carroll Independent employees donated
22 whole pints of blood to the American Red Cross. Since each blood donation may help save up to 3 lives, Carroll's employees
may save as many as 66 lives!
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk - Late Summer - For the last two years, Carroll Independent
employees and their families have participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk held in downtown Baltimore.
In 2004, the Carroll Team had 38 walkers on hand to join the more than 2,500 walkers for this event. The Carroll Team
raised $800.00 and the entire Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk raised over $250,000 towards the fight against
Breast Cancer. The Corporate Giving Committee and the Carroll Wellness Council donated a matching contribution of
$800.00 to show the Company's support for this worthy cause and to aid in the fight against Breast Cancer.
Food and Toy Drives - Thanksgiving - Each year, Carroll holds a food and toy drive to help needy
Baltimore area families with food and toys for the holidays. In 2004, Carroll employees delivered three vehicles of
donations (over 2000 canned goods and dry foods) to the Cares Food Pantry located at St Mary's in Govans. They were
overwhelmed by the donation (reportedly the largest single donation they have ever received). Cares Food Pantry
distributed the food to needy families in Baltimore City. In addition, toys gathered during the toy drive were donated
for the Baltimore Police Department's Annual Toy Drive.
2005 Calendar - Get Involved!
Summer 2005 - the Committee is looking into participating in a local Habitat for Humanity project.
Fall 2005 - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
Thanksgiving 2005 - Annual Food and Toy Drive and Competition
More events will be posted as details become available!
Committee Goals for 2005
The main goal for the Community Involvement and Corporate Giving Committee for 2005 is to increase employee involvement
and participation in community involvement and volunteering activities.
