Easy Ways to Reduce Your Energy Bills
- Annual Tune-Ups - Having your heating system tuned up annually will ensure that it is heating your home in the most
efficient way possible, and it will extend the life of your heating system. A lack of regular maintenance forces your
system to work longer, causing you to burn up to 10% more fuel. Schedule your tune-up with us now - before or after the
heating season is the best time!
- Don't Block the Heat - Allow free movement of heat around vents, radiators, or baseboards. Avoid blocking these heat
outlets with any furniture or heavy drapes, and dust them regularly. A dirty vent, radiator or baseboard hinders heat
output.
- Bounce - Place metal reflectors (cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil works just as well) behind radiators or above your
baseboards to "bounce" the heat toward the center of the room.
- Change Your Filter - Change your furnace filter every month.
- Insulate - Insulate air ducts that pass through unheated spaces and have your ducts checked for any
leaks.
- Keep Drafts Out - On a windy day, hold a lit incense stick next to windows, doors, electrical boxes,
plumbing fixtures, and other places where cold air can enter your house. If the smoke moves in a horizontal path, you've
found an air leak, which can be fixed by caulking, sealing, or weatherstripping.
- Let the Sunshine In - You may be surprised how warm the sunshine can keep your home if you simply
open blinds and curtains each morning before you leave the house.
- Turn it Down - By simply turning your water heater down from 140 degrees to 130 degrees, you can
save more than 10% on your water heating bill.
- Bundle Up - If your water heater is in an unheated space, insulate it with a "jacket". Be sure to read
the installation instructions carefully.
- Drain It - Draining your water heater every six months will help increase its efficiency and extend
its life by removing sediment and deposits.
- Go With the (Low) Flow - Installing a flow-restricting showerhead can reduce hot water usage by as
much as 50% without affecting shower pressure.
