Kerosene FAQs  Kerosene FAQs

  • Q: What are the most common uses for kerosene?
  • Kerosene is most commonly used in on-road and farming applications, as a light and heat source for outdoor camping, and as a portable source of heat.
  • Q: What is the difference between clear and red kerosene?
  • The only difference is the fact that red kerosene contains red dye, and clear kerosene does not. As of July 1, 1998, kerosene that is dyed red is used for "off-road" purposes and is not taxed. Kerosene used for on-road applications is taxed at at rate of $.244 per gallon. The visual marking or dying of kerosene was part of the 1997 Taxpayer's Relief Act, passed to prevent truckers from purchasing non-taxed kerosene for their trucks.
  • Q: How is K1 kerosene different from other types of kerosene?
  • K1 is the safest type of kerosene. Other grades contain more sulfur and produce emissions that can endanger your health.
