Kerosene Safety Tips

• Before purchasing a kerosene heater, make sure that your local and state codes and regulations allow its use.



• Purchase only kerosene heaters that bear the mark of an independent testing laboratory.



• Know how to operate the manual shut-off switch on your heater in case a flare-up occurs.



• Always burn only kerosene in your heater, and never mix any gasoline or other fuel with it.



• When storing fuel, make sure the containers are clearly labeled to reduce the chance of mistaking gasoline for kerosene.



• Always use K1 kerosene. Other grades contain more sulfur and will increase emissions, endangering your health.



• Never fill the heater while it is turned on or while it is still hot.



• It is a good idea to refuel the heater outside when the device has cooled to prevent spillage which could ignite on a hot surface.



• Be sure you position your heater away from high-traffic areas so that it cannot be overturned.



• Put your heater in a well-ventilated room (as a rule of thumb, open one window one square inch for every 1,000 BTU's of your heater's rating).



• Keep flammable objects such as fabrics, papers, and flammable liquids at least 3 feet away from the heater.
